There are two main types of mining in Elite: Dangerous, Core mining where rocks are cracked open to access the valuable materials inside and laser mining where rock are mined with a traditional mining laser. To go mining in Elite Dangerous, there are a few things you need to have on your ship: at least one Class 2 hardpoint (these are the points you attach things to on your ship) for the mining tools, and enough slots for other crucial mining features, like the Refinery, Limpet Controller, a Detailed Surface Scanner, and a Cargo Rack.

What you want to find is a huge neutron star field and just farm it until you have enough for your wanted exploration rank. Each neutron star will net you 40,000-50,000 Credits and they are usually surrounded by several scoopable stars so you can keep scanning them as long as you want without running out of fuel.

Exobiology and using the "Juicer" (Genetic Sampling Tool): First you will need the Odyssey expansion (of course), but also an Artemis exploration suit. Only the Artemis has the "juicer". When scanning planets, the FSS will show you a number of biological signals. This number corresponds to the number of types of life forms, not locations.

First off, you’ll need to find a proper mining location. Look for scarcely populated remote star systems with planets / moons that have pristine icy rings. If you see other commanders around, it’s bad news, you don’t want the hotspots to be spoiled, so find an alternative star system.

Mining in Elite Dangerous is a complex and multifaceted game mechanic. It ties into player skill, game markets prices, and now with Fleet Carriers, user driven economies. There are risks, and rewards, and the possibility for many experiences that are truly unique and authentic.

Ice Mining: It is fun but unless you have stacked missions, it won’t be as profitable as Metallics. It is needed for Missions and Engineers though. If you are mining for money, then you are looking for “Low Bro, Lit on Meth” or Low Temp Diamonds (LTD), Bromellite, Lithium Hydroxide, and Methanol Monohydrate (only enough for missions).

Analysis Mode. Full Spectrum System Scanner. Elite Dangerous: Beyond Chapter Four adds the Analysis Mode with the improved Exploration Discovery Scanner, Full Spectrum System Scanner and Detailed Surface Scanner. This is a brand new way for all Commanders to explore the Milky Way galaxy.
